Oh, gods. Inflation happens!
According to this inflation calculator from the bureau of labor statistics, $1.64 in 2000 should buy you $2.09 worth of goods in 2008 -- if only.

No smack down...just fact-checking.
I wasn't saying inflation was the sole cause of gas prices. But I do think it's silly to blame Bush for all of it.
Speculation had a big role in the oil boom as well.
But it's impossible to argue the fact that our country would be in a completely different place now had Gore been appointed president eight years ago. Gas might still be expensive, but we would be much further down the road to attaining oil-indepedence (not to be confused with the oil-friendly term "energy-independence") than we are currently.
