Mudnessa Wins a Free Stop Shark Finning Tshirt

5 pennies earned

As you can tell by the unhappy mug in the accompanying picture, we have bittersweet feelings about announcing the winner of our first politically-motivated free tshirt contest. We are happy that so many of you not only took the time to look up the answers to these questions but also let us know how learning about the plight of the shark was either new or heartfelt for you. Thank you for reminding us of some of the good we can hope to accomplish by using our website as a platform for the dissemination of important information beyond sales and coupons.

The bitter part, though, comes from reading over and over that approximately 97% of Tiger Sharks have been decimated since 1972 and that likely over 8,000 tons of shark fins are used in restaurants every year.

Congratulations to mudnessa, who was chosen from all the top entries by a random process of elimination, to win the free Stop Shark Finning t-shirt courtesy of Shirts on Sale and Ban T-shirts. Not only did mudnessa provide all the right answers she(?) also has an excellent signature that had us smiling through the tears:

So-called "global warming" is just a secret plot by wacko tree huggers to make America energy independent, clean our air and water, improve the fuel efficiency of our vehicles, kick-start 21st-century industries, and make our cities safer and more livable. Don't let them get away with it! founder and president Chip Giller
A special mention for the following players who made it to the finals:
Bo M.
Doug S.
Brett N.
Connor S.
Perry A.
Susana N.
Jackie H.
  1. By what percentage has the population of tiger sharks fallen since 1972? 97%
  2. Why do fishermen only want the fins from the sharks? Because shark meat is of low economical value and takes up too much space in the hold. It also contains urea, which turns to ammonia once the shark has died and contaminates other fish.
  3. How many tons of shark fins are used by restaurants each year? 8,000 tons
  4. How many miles can long-lines be and what percentage of long-line catch is thrown back into the sea? They can be over 100 miles; 25% of lon-line catch is thrown back into the sea.
  5. What Chinese company has been acting as a shark fin "broker"? Alibaba
  6. What internet search engine is closely associated with this Chinese company? Yahoo
  7. Where can you sign an online pledge to never consume shark fin products? Humane Society International

Woohoo, thanks so much. I was very saddened to actually learn some of the stats. Glad you liked my "signature" recently I have been getting a lot of feedback on it.

I was going to enter, but I saw a lot of people had already sent answers. So I didn't.

How did you see that? They were sent to our email and we didn't publicize the names until we announced the winner?

Uh oh! Is this place bugged? Is Victor planning something big?

Are you two in cahoots!?

I swear, I only hacked the site to protect it.
